Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Members Take Tour of Filtering Services

TOKYO May 24, 2010

After the enactment of the Internet Control Law in April 2009, more and more municipal governments have been amending their child protection ordinances. In Tokyo, cooperation in providing filtering has been required by metropolitan ordinance since 2005, and this spring, the assembly began discussing further amendments to the ordinance.

It was this discussion that prompted 13 assembly members affiliated with the Democratic Party of Japan and the Life Network of Metropolitan Assembly Mirai to visit NetSTAR’s head offices in Tokyo to see for themselves.
These assembly members wanted to gain a deeper understanding of this topic for their discussions, and they selected NetSTAR because of the vital role that filtering plays in the issue of Internet use by minors and because of NetSTAR’s position as the sole provider of list data for the filtering services of Japan's mobile telephone service providers.

Assembly members first learned about the latest filtering technology and services as well as NetSTAR’s proprietary efforts from NetSTAR staff.
After the presentations, the assembly members asked many questions about each type of service and issue, the potential future development of the technology, and the role that the ordinance should play, and they became so engrossed in the discussion that they exceeded their scheduled tour time by a large margin.
As the representative of the tour group, Hiroki Masuko (standing in for the policy chief of the DPJ of the Tokyo Assembly) said, “I would like to use the knowledge that we acquired today about filtering and its role to deepen our discussion about amending the ordinance.”

NetSTAR does not stop at providing the filtering technology. We also conduct risk awareness seminars and provide speakers to study groups and others because we believe it is vital that parents and those involved with children have an understanding of this technology. (For some examples, see http://www.netstar-inc.com/support/cs/detachment.html (Japanese Only))
We also do as much as we can to respond to queries about filtering from assembly members and other local government representatives.
