NetSTAR to Provide URL List for au’s New Filtering Service
- Provision to Japan’s three mobile phone carriers contributes to safe Internet access from mobile phones -
TOKYO January 15th, 2008
NetSTAR Inc. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Noboru Ogahara; hereinafter “NetSTAR”), the leading company in the Japanese web filtering industry, hereby announces that KDDI CORPORATION (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Tadashi Onodera, hereinafter “KDDI”), will adopt NetSTAR’s URL list to provide a URL filtering service for KDDI’s au mobile phones. KDDI will release this service in March 2008 under the name, “EZ Safe Access Service, Category Restriction Course”.
In recognition of the growing social problem involving minors accessing the web from mobile phones, KDDI currently offers a free service called, “EZ Safe Access Service” that allows access within the so-called official sites only to those with content geared specifically to minors.
This new service, “EZ Safe Access Service Category Restriction Course”, is free-of-charge and will provide access to a wider range of general websites in addition to the official sites while automatically filtering mobile phone browsers from websites considered harmful to the sound development of minors such as adult-content, dating sites, gambling, and illegal information, and also websites that could potentially lead to problems for adults, such as bogus billing scams.
This kind of filtering service relies on URL lists compiled by research and categorization of websites throughout the world. NetSTAR, a specialized company in this field, will provide URL lists used in business and home filtering services to KDDI’s new service.
This provision makes KDDI the third mobile phone company to adopt NetSTAR’s URL lists in addition to NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank Mobile.
In 2004, NetSTAR responded to the sharp increase in mobile phone users and mobile-oriented websites by becoming one of the industry’s first companies to specialize in the collection and categorization of mobile-oriented websites. In 2005, Vodafone Japan (now SoftBank Mobile) adopted NetSTAR’s URL lists for their unsolicited email protection and since then, mobile phone companies have turned to NetSTAR for both web filtering services and anti-spam solutions like NTT DoCoMo’s “i-Mode Filter”.
In times when problems associated with Internet access from mobile phones continue to increase, so will society’s expectations on filtering services for mobile phones. NetSTAR will continue to work closely with mobile phone companies and government agencies and organizations to support the fight against such problems.
NetSTAR will also continue to commit to the global community by making Internet access safe for everyone, and for any terminal, be it a computer, mobile phone, or game console.■ Provision of NetSTAR’s URL lists to mobile phone companies
