Vodafone K.K. service to prevent unsolicited email adopts NetStar’s URL database

- First introduction of a URL database into a mobile phone service -

TOKYO February 15th, 2005

NetSTAR Inc, the leading company in the Japanese web filtering industry, announced today that its URL database has been adopted by Vodafone K.K. in its latest service for protecting its mobile phone customers in Japan from unsolicited emails.

NetSTAR’s URL database would be loaded onto the NEC Corporation’s “SLIMIT-C” Email filtering system, which has been adopted by Vodafone. This Vodafone’s latest service for unsolicited mail offers solution for emails that include URLs. Customers can select the categories such as “Adult”, “Online dating”, and thus reject emails that include these URLs. With this solution, customers will be able to browse emails through mobile phones with safety and comfort.

We believe this adoption by Vodafone K.K. and NEC was achieved by the recognition of NetSTAR, providing its URL database to such products as the Japanese top brand URL filtering product “InterSafe” (development/distribution by Alps System Integration Co., Ltd.) and other major products and services, in addition with the credit to holding the largest URL classification center in Japan.

NetSTAR will be continuing its efforts in creating the best URL database in a long-term basis. Also in order to expand the penetration of the URL database, NetSTAR will be actively working with its existing OEM partners in the URL filtering business, and from now on will also increase its approach in the mobile phone industry.

About NetSTAR

NetSTAR Inc is one of the few companies, which hold the technology for database compilation and classification of URLs, as well as a means of updating and delivering the latest URL database to the customers. NetSTAR’s URL lists are automatically acquired through an advanced algorithm, each website is visually confirmed, classified and then registered at the largest scaled URL classification center in Japan.
Since the company’s establishment in 2001, NetSTAR’s URL database is updated everyday, and as of February 2005, NetSTAR’s database contains approximately more than 28 million web pages.
Within the database, the most covered language is Japanese, which is approximately 70%, and the other languages are mainly English, Chinese, Spanish and Korean. Nowadays, since the Internet use is not only major through the personal computer, but also through mobile phones, NetSTAR has been actively working on compilation and classification for mobile phone sites in full scale.

The products, in which NetSTAR provides its URL database, are the “InterSafe” product family (development/distribution by Alps System Integration Co., Ltd.) and the “InterScan WebManager” product family (development/distribution by Trend Micro Inc.). Both products are provided to enterprises, governments, schools, and home users. The total share NetSTAR holds in the Japanese URL filtering industry is more than 30% ※which now is the top share.
NetSTAR also provides its URL database to Internet access analysis software, as well as to keyword search services adopted by a major internet service provider, and thus is also expanding outside the filtering product domain.

※The total share of these two products will be the share NetSTAR holds in the Japanese web filtering market, and is reported to be 30.5 % (2.2 billion yen) in 2003 and expected to be 33.3%( 3.1 billion yen) in 2004. This data result comes from the Fuji Chimera Research Institute report “2004 Network security business research” issued on July 23, 2004.
